Sandy Alderson on the Mets Off-Season

1

January 31, 2013 by Matt Musico

Sandy Alderson spoke to Mets season ticket holders yesterday, and told them the team not spending on players via free agency this season was his decision, not the Wilpons. Here is most meaningful quote (captured by Adam Rubin of ESPN New York):

“We understand what the market dictates and we have to be prepared to exist in that market. Am I going to recommended that we sit here in New York City and function like the Oakland Athletics for the next 10 years? No I’m not. … I’m not asking you to believe me until you see some manifestation of that, which I hope is sooner rather than later.”

Fans are frustrated, and he gets it. He knows they won’t believe him until they see action and results, and he doesn’t blame them. For Mets fans, let’s hope this “plan” works and will bring a consistent competitor back to Flushing.
